Marcus Aurelius

Marc Simon Frei, Altdorf
Have a conversation with one of the great Roman Stoic philosophers. Watch his brain light up as he "thinks."
This work is a bridge between past and present – an attempt to translate the world of thought of one of the great Roman Stoics into our own time. It is not merely a representation but an invitation to dialogue: What does wisdom mean today, and how does it differ from the abundance of mere information?
The artwork plays with the idea of making thought visible. The “lighting up of the brain” symbolizes the inner process of reflection – usually hidden, here transformed into a visual language. This creates a tension: between the quietude of ancient philosophy and the glare of modern technology, between inner contemplation and outward display.
It invites viewers to pause, to reflect on the essence of wisdom – patience, discipline, humanity – values that stood at the heart of Stoic philosophy and remain profoundly relevant in today’s fast-paced world.
Ultimately, this work is more than a homage. It is an open space for questions: What can we still learn from antiquity? And how can we bring these ancient insights to light in an age defined by speed, data, and constant distraction?
